Abnormal Curvature

Peyronie’s disease is characterized by an unnatural curvature of the penis, which is caused by “plaque” (scar tissue) that develops on the upper or lower side of the penis in layers containing erectile tissue. Cases of Peyronie’s disease, which range from mild to severe, begin as a localized inflammation that can develop into a hardened scar. The plaque/scar tissue can prevent a complete erection as well as cause painful erections. Peyronie’s disease may be connected to a personal or family history of autoimmune or connective tissue disorders. Sometimes, Peyronie’s develops due to trauma to the penis or groin area. In any case, Peyronie’s disease is not cancerous and is not a sexually transmitted disease. Treatments range from surgery to injections of a FDA approved medication called a “collagenase.”
